Phosphatidylcholine is the active ingredient in lecithin, which works by increasing the action of enzymes that break down cell membrane lipids. In fat cells, this action increases the fluidity and permeability of the adipocyte membrane, facilitating the release of fat. Lecithin also increases the solubility of cholesterol. Every cell membrane in the body requires phosphatidylcholine (PC), which is also the main source of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. PC is considered to be a very good water-binding agent and helps other ingredients penetrate into the skin. The use of PC in aesthetic medicine is restricted to low fat deposits in patients with ideal body weight or slightly overweight. The sodium derived from the deoxycholic acid emulsifies the fats and facilitates the action of the lipase.
